Oooh, I love these! I believe Watterson made that comic in the period he was fighting the syndicate over merchandising rights, and this was his way of putting some of his frustration on paper.

I’ve recently learned that Columbia University in the US has been acquiring a whole lot of original comic book art and that you can take classes in it there. One of my favorites, Rick Veitch, just had his own original art acquired by them. Good thing that someone is taking the medium seriously.
